Announcements
June 5, 2006
Dear Supporters:
We are in a very tight race. A huge percentage of the voters appear to be undecided. We have identified enough voters to win. We need help getting them to the polls. Don't let this election be bought by a guy who refused to agree to abide by campaign spending limits.
Attached is a downloadable version of our Photo Biography brochure that has been extremly well recieved by community members. It has helped voters firmly decide on Elena Popp for State Assembly. If you have not made a final decision please review this final brochure.

If you cannot volunteer in the next two days please:

With 5 days remaining, we are proud to announce a clean sweep on key media endorsements -
La Opinion on May 23,
Los Angeles Times on May 30 and the LA Weekly on June 1.
LA Times: "... bright, plain-spoken, accomplished and the most independent ... record of transcending parochial interests and crafting pragmatic solutions to community problems ... native of Mexico, grew up in the district and knows its needs." LA Times Endorsement
La Opinion: "[her] training and experience make her the candidate most able to deal with the difficult issues .... independent of the numerous interests that are vying to influence change in our education system. Without doubt students and parents will be her primary concern."
La Opinion Endorsement
LA Weekly: “The one candidate who offers strong convictions, an extensive record of activism and a degree of independence … has a keen understanding of the work needed to pass health care legislation, fund public education and protect vulnerable housing units ... has a strong understanding of the district.…”

LA Weekly Candidate Review
The Popp campaign is elated and encouraged with this exciting news. However, the question remains - can we turn these endorsements into votes?
The answer to the question depends on you. Will you come out and help get the word out to voters?
I received the news of the LA Weekly endorsement last night at a meet and greet in the Virgil Village/East Hollywood neighborhood where I grew up. An amazing young organizer named Mari had spoken very kindly about me and then pointed out .... this race is in part about electing the most qualified candidate. It is also about showing the world, including our allies that a grassroots campaign can defeat the glitz, money and paid heavy pressure that our allies have fallen into.
We are finding a huge number of undecided voters torn between the granddaughter of an icon .... the Mayor's power and charisma .... and the need to elect the most qualified candidate. We will only be able to point them in the right direction with the help of their neighbors.
Join us for phone banking - Every day between 10AM and 9PM.
Or adopt your precinct.
Our hours this weekend are 8AM to 9PM.
Please Forward this E-mail Widely.
Spread the Good News to Your Friends and Neighbors.
I look forward to celebrating with you at the Victory Party!!!!

The Los Angeles Times endorsed Elena today describing her as "bright, plain-spoken, accomplished and the most independent of the five Democrats vying to replace Jackie Goldberg..." The Times went on to say ".... she has a record of transcending parochial interests and crafting pragmatic solutions to community problems. Popp, a native of Mexico, grew up in the district and knows its needs."
Regarding the other candidates the Times says: De Leon "... would have to work hard to carve out an independent path." Christine Chavez: "... backed by Hollywood stars and others who remember her legendary grandfather, labor leader Cesar Chavez, but pedigree is not enough." Gabriel Buelna: "... is impressive, although not ready for the Assembly."

Last week La Opinion endorsed Elena saying that her "training and experience make her the candidate most able to deal with the difficult issues...." and that she is “... independent of the numerous interests that are vying to influence change in our education system. Without doubt students and parents will be her primary concern.”

All indications are that the race continues to be very close. Some polls show Elena, Christine and Gabriel neck and neck with Kevin 10 points behind. Other polls show Christine further ahead of the other three. Gabriel's poll shows him ahead.
The Popp Campaign analysts indicate this race is between Elena and Christine although the Mayor and his troops were out in force this weekend and no doubt had an impact.
We need your help more than ever. Please contact Bridget at 323/230-6490 OR come into the office at any time during our office hours. When we reach voters, they are persuaded to vote for Elena.
We need you to help us reach more voters and to hold on to our supporters given the invasion of Sacramento staffers, Mayoral staff and paid walkers that are coming into our neighborhoods.
Will Chistine Debate Elena or Will She
Dodge Yet Another Opportunity to Face the Voters?
Christine Chavez has missed the last 8 candidate forums citing scheduling conflicts. To date attempts to persuade her to go before the voters and engage in an honest and open debate on the issues have fallen on deaf ears.
The voters have the right to decide for themselves who is best able to address the needs of the District and the best way to help the voters make that determination is to engage in an open debate. Elena has agreed to make herself available any time between now and June 6 to debate Chavez.

La Opinion Endorses Elena Popp --
a True and Independent Leader
http://laopinion.com/editorial/
The endorsement concludes:
..., Elena Popp is the most qualified because she personifies all of the [positive] qualities of her opponents mentioned above and much more.
Popp, ... has dealt with the difficulties and challenges that district residents face. Her training and experience make her the candidate most able to deal with the difficult issues...
She is also independent of the numerous interests that are vying to influence change in our education system. Without doubt students and parents will be her primary concern. For all of these reasons: Vote for Elena Popp!
Money Still Vitally Needed to Counter Negative Campaigning
We are close to making our minimum budget but need help countering Kevin's barrage. We would love to do two additional mail pieces highlighting press reports of Elena's leadership abilities and independence and to pay for recorded calls from Jackie.
We also want to mail our big biographical piece to areas with high numbers of security buildings. It was hand delivered by volunteer precinct leaders in other areas. Many high propensity voters live in security buildings.
One of the campaigns is spreading mis-information about Elena's status as an attorney. These allegations are not true and we need funds to set the set the record straight and make sure our supporters stay with us.

Listen to Elena on KPCCElena, Kevin de Leon and Gabriel Buelna were on KPCC yesterday morning. Christine declined to participate in a"forum" or "debate" format. Elena was spectacular by all reviews received to date. She showed her leadership abilities once again.

Dear Supporter:
Now, more than ever, we need your financial support. Our polling shows that I will be the victor if we have enough money to get our message out. We are, however, being seriously outspent by a Sacramento insider who has managed to get a significant number of $6,700 contributions from Sacramento lobbyists and from local developers including Richard Meruelo (see links to LA Weekly recent articles).
We must raise another $22,000 this week in order to counter the barrage of mail he is likely to send to voters.
The people of the 45th Assembly District deserve to be represented by someone who is qualified to serve and who has a history in the district. I was raised in the 45th Assembly District. I also have a 20 year history working for economic, social and environmental justice in the 45th and surrounding communities. I am the only candidate in the race that gives a place at the table to three under-represented groups - Latinos, Women and the LGBT community. My history of activism in our community has been exemplary.
Kevin de Leon is the only candidate in the race that has refused to comply with campaign spending limits. http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_cand_stat.htm
Please let the voice of the people be heard. Hundreds of people, most of them local residents, have contributed comparatively smaller amounts of money to get me elected. In order to combat the barrage of $6,700 donations, we need each supporter to dig a tad deeper.
Please make a contribution to the campaign today!!

Supporters:
Our GRASSROOTS campaign is succeeding thanks to help from hundreds of local community members, activists, friends and neighbors like you!
Our volunteer corps includes multi-lingual phone bankers and precinct leaders. You too can help us reach Spanish-speaking, Russian, Thai, Pilipino, Korean, and Armenian voters who are eager to participate in the democratic process but need help understanding the differences among the candidates and making the right choice.
Join our LGBT Action Team to network and rally the troops to save the district’s LGBT representation. Join our 50/50 by 2020 Brigade to ensure that the representation of women does not drop from our current 26% to 7% in 2008.
Elena is the most qualified candidate in the race AND gives a place at the table to three under-represented communities - Latinos, Women and the LGBT Community. Diversity in our State legislature is essential.
Election Day is very near and the race is still very tight. Help us get our campaign message to the voters. Please join us again this weekend at 9AM or any time during our office hours. Adopt a precinct for calling or walking. Come in to phone bank. And work your Internet contact list.
As you may know, Elena’s very competitive race has benefited most from smaller donations from community members. We are proud of the large number of people who have given. Thank you if you have already contributed. If you have not done so yet and/or you can give a little more, please do so now as we are reaching a critical fundraising deadline. Please ask others to donate. We need to raise $11,000 additional dollars to be able to get our mail out and stay competitive. Please contribute today.
$25 from everyone on this list that has not already gone on line would get us there. Higher contributions are welcomed too. Please print the form at the bottom of this e-mail and mail in your check or contribute on the secure online service through our accounting firm right now at: Contribute
Also - Please reserve dedicated campaign time during the next three weekends for us. We can also use your help on weekdays and evenings.
GOTV activities are planned for June 3, 4, 5 and 6. Your help will make the difference.
Recent polls show that the race is very, very tight between Elena, Christine, and Gabriel. Kevin is apparently far behind (10+ points) in spite of TV ads, radio and significant endorsements. This incredible result is the product of our incredible, grassroots precinct operation. Other candidates will kick their media and mail campaign into high gear and it is essential that we double and triple our grassroots efforts in the field in order to counter the barrage.
Please come in to volunteer. The campaign operation is in high gear -- 7 days weekly! Please fit in some time to help assure that, Elena Popp, the ONLY candidate that was raised in the community and whose motivation in running for this office is to assure the interests our community is elected. We need to make sure that the BEST qualified, experienced and effective leader makes it to the finish line first. In this primary – winner takes all. There are no run offs!
Thank YOU!

Dear Supporters:
We are pleased to announce that Elena has received the endorsement of United Auto Workers Union, District 5 CAP Council and Capitol Area Political Action Committee. We also just received word that Elena was endorsed - with 80% of the members voting for Elena - by So Cal Grassroots Hollywood Region. Thanks to their members for their support and to new community leaders that have also come on board. (see list below.)
Precinct leaders are reporting high levels of support for Elena. Our new material is fantastic ... or shall we say "firme" .... and fabulous!!!!
It tells a story in pictures. Elena is "from our community" and has worked "for our community." Voters are beginning to vote absentee and we need to get it out to every voter door-to-door and into local stores ... this weekend. We are recruiting young people to get this done. We need drivers and droppers.
Please be at the campaign office and give us a few hours anytime in the next few days. Come in a team of 2 to 5 for maximum efficiency.
Support for Elena did not wane even when our leaders told voters of the Mayor's endorsement of Kevin de León. Elena is unquestionably more qualified. The Mayor himself told her she was the most qualified candidate in the race and her record speaks for itself. His LAUSD take-over proposal is not popular with voters and her courage in maintaining a principled position on this issue while Kevin de Leon is wavering speaks volumes to voters about Elena's leadership abilities.
The race is very close according to all polls. Kevin de León's literature has started to reach the voters. The de León campaign has so much Sacramento money it is paying for radio and television ads. $1 million in special-interest funds can only be countered with direct, door-to-door, neighbor-to-neighbor contact. We need your help.
Please:
- Call Bridgett at 323/230-6490 to arrange to pick up a list of 100 voters in your neighborhood that need to be contacted. Some of our precinct leaders are mono-lingual in either English or Spanish and we could use support from folks anywhere in the City to do phone calls from home if necessary. Volunteer to pair up with a monolingual leader. We also need help with Russian, Armenian, Thai, and Tagalog. Volunteer
- Make a donation today - $25, $50, $100 .... $3300. Help us raise the $47,000 we still need to get our message to the voters. If everyone on our list gave $25 we would be there. Please give what you can. Contribute
